Shirley grew up amongst the rolling hills of the parkland in the farming community of Edgerton, Alberta. As a child, she loved art, nature and writing. In 1982 she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alberta. Her love of the outdoors then led her to Lethbridge Community College, where she received a diploma in Renewable Resource Management in 1986. She has worked in a number of glorious Alberta Parks, National and Provincial. She taught Elementary School for 13 years which included teaching art. When she left teaching, there was more time to pursue artistic endeavors. Shirley resides near Vimy, Alberta. Through all of her ventures, art has always been an important escape.
Inspired from her childhood memories and a deep appreciation of the natural world, Shirley’s realistic works in watercolor and oil, as well as photography, include delicate florals, rolling landscapes full of texture and color, fine furry detail of fauna, and nostalgic homesteads and grain elevators that evoke soul-soothing memories. Shirley has enjoyed participating in the Airdrie Artists Guild, St. Albert Painters Guild, the Westlock Art Club and was a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She has exhibited her work in a number of venues selling many pieces through shows and commissions and has donated paintings to The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Ducks Unlimited for charity. Shirley has enhanced her artistic skills from a variety of wonderful instructors through art workshops and online tutorials. She has recently written, and illustrated in watercolor, a children’s chapter book, entitled Gosling Rescue, to be released this fall. Her artwork can be enjoyed by all ages, as her love of nature and memories of the past come to life in her paintings.
